Who we are

Queen Hive Farm is a premier lesson, boarding and training facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia, just 12 minutes from world-famous vacation destination Chincoteague Island, and the pristine beaches of Assateague Island National Seashore. (See directions to farm below.) We offer many services for visitors to the area, as well as local clients. These include:

·       Riding Lessons (Private & Group)

Book a riding lesson on one of our gentle, well-trained lesson horses. Fun for any age; no experience necessary! $25/half hour or $35/hour

·       Trail Riding Lessons

Entire families enjoy this option! No experience necessary. We have a horse for everyone – even Dad (200 lb. maximum due to size of our horses). Start with a tutorial in our fenced riding ring. Basic instruction provided for everyone. Experienced riders can enjoy trotting, cantering and jumping in our ring. Then we go out on the trail around the farm. Small children will be led, and an instructor will lead the way on foot or horseback depending on the riders’ experience and comfort level. Very scenic – sometimes we see wild turkeys, ring-necked pheasants, eastern bluebirds, and white-tailed deer. Visitors of all experience levels rate this ride very highly! $35/person (50-55 minutes)  (Trail photos by Scott Chesson)

Boarding (Full-time or Vacation)

Bring your own horse and ride on Assateague beach or our nearby trails. (Sorry, we don’t rent out horses to ride on the beach, nor does anyone else in the area). See our Rates & Services link below for various boarding options and costs.

        Training (Full-time or Vacation)

Bring your horse for a tune-up while you’re on vacation! We can train your horse in the ring or on trails while you relax on the beach. Later, you can visit the farm for a demonstration ride, or take a lesson or trail ride on your newly tuned-up horse. See Rates & Services link below for costs.

        Leasing (Regular students only)

Students can lease a QHF horse to ride two extra days per week, including trails.

        Horse Shows

Queen Hive Farm hosts nine shows per season, including our Spring Series, Summer Series and Fall Series. We also attend a variety of rated and non-rated shows at other locations each season.

        Parades

We ride on the local parade circuit, including parades in Chincoteague Island, Onancock and Pocomoke City, Md.

        Competitive Trail Rides/Endurance Rides

Queen Hive Farm students are regular attendees at competitive and non-competitive trail rides and

                        endurance rides.

        4-H

We are affiliated with the active Eastern Shore Trail Blazers 4-H Club, an equine-centered 4-H Club with an emphasis on trail riding. New members are welcome. Horse ownership is not necessary to join and participate. Inquire at QHF and we’ll set you up with Trail Blazers.

QHF Clients Rescue Morgan Set for Slaughter

In April 09, we learned of Beau, a Morgan in Pennsylvania that was scheduled to board a dealer’s truck bound for the slaughterhouse in Canada. He was a lifelong Amish driving horse that was sold at auction due to advancing age. A horse dealer had bought him, but in this economy horses are a “dime a dozen” so Beau didn’t sell within the dealer’s allotted time. All of this dealer’s unsold horses go directly to slaughter, so that appeared to be Beau’s fate. Two days before he was due to leave, I received an e-mail about him from a Morgan contact. A PA rescue group in coordination with a Virginia rescue group was trying to collect $650 to buy him from the dealer. When my clients heard about this, several of them pitched in to buy him in time, and then a herd of people, including some I didn’t even know, sent more funds to have him quarantined for a month at the rescue farm, and to cover his veterinary and transport expenses.

Beau is now here at Queen Hive Farm!  He is being used for beginner lessons, trail rides, parades and horse camps. He is sweet and cooperative. For the first time, I am offering carriage driving lessons, thanks to Beau and his many patrons! I think it’s a perfect way to honor the memory of Tiffany, my beginner lesson Morgan who passed away this spring: rescuing another Morgan from death to spend the remainder of his life at Queen Hive Farm, giving lessons to the people who rescued him, as well as many others.

We will be having a party soon for Beau, and we hope that his sponsors will come to meet him and enjoy a carriage ride!

Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to his release from “the big house.” There is a special place in Heaven (and my heart) for anyone who helps an animal in need. Thanks also to Another Chance 4 Horses rescue group and Forever Morgans rescue group for coordinating Beau’s rescue!

Meet the Trainers

About the instructor/trainer:
Jennifer Cording is a Shore native with over 30 years of riding and horse-care experience. She learned the basics of hunt seat, saddle seat and western riding, and the art of showing horses, under longtime local instructor Mary Ann Bradley.

As a young adult, Jennifer furthered her education in the hunt seat and saddle seat disciplines under Kathleen Peeples of New Jersey and Scott Thacker of North Carolina, both world-caliber trainers and instructors with multiple world and national championships to their credit. Kathleen showed Jennifer's home-trained Morgan, JW Millionaire, to six national and world titles in 1996 and 1997.

Jennifer has extensive show-ring experience, and has won on a regional level. She has trained numerous horses of many breeds, including green and very young horses.  A bachelor's degree in education and several years of classroom teaching experience add to her ability in instructing riders.

Jennifer combines the skills she has learned from many people (and horses!) to teach her students and train her horses. She believes there is no single "right" way to teach a rider or a horse, as long as the result is respectful and successful for both and does no harm to either.

About the assistant instructor/trainer:

Katye Allen is a lifelong horsewoman born into a family of horse enthusiasts. She trained under her older sister, Kerra Johnson, and has taken lessons from Olympic rider Denny Emerson. Katye has ridden and shown in English, western, dressage and eventing. She is currently eventing her home-trained thoroughbred-cross, Andante, who recently won his division at a Maryland event.

Katye is a member of the Chincoteague Pony Drill Team, which has won many prizes at local events, as well as exhibited at the Kentucky Horse Park and events as far as Louisiana. She is also an experienced riding instructor and trainer of young ponies and horses.

Meet JW Millionaire

“Bucky,” raised from a yearling by Jennifer, was purchased at the 1989 Sale of the Century in Lexington, Ky. His talent as a hunter pleasure horse was evident from the beginning as he won the large open hunter championship as a 3-year-old at his first A-rated Morgan show. In 1996, Morgan trainer Kathleen Peeples showed Bucky to several regional and national titles at the Morgan World Championship Show in Oklahoma City, including World Hunter Pleasure Reserve Champion. In 1997, Bucky returned to the World Championship Show and claimed several more titles, including World Ladies Hunter Pleasure Reserve Champion.

Bucky has also won numerous times on the local show circuit, and currently gives lessons to more advanced students when not eating, which is his favorite activity by far.

Farm Philosophy

It is the goal at Queen Hive Farm to teach our students the rewards of skilled riding and the proper handling of horses. Few joys in life can compare with a harmonious relationship between rider and horse. Of course, there are responsibilities associated with riding and handling horses, and we teach those skills as well. Respect and proper care for the animal are paramount at Queen Hive Farm.
We know our students want to learn more about horses and riding - and to have a good time doing it. Therefore, we strive to make every experience fun and educational.
However, we must emphasize that no skill is learned overnight. A beginner can't "learn to ride" in a month, or even a year. In fact, even an equestrian with 20 or 30 years of riding experience doesn't know it all.
Learning to ride is a never-ending journey with many challenges and infinite rewards. At Queen Hive Farm, we are happy to share the journey with you.
